Our Company

As a leader in oil and gas publishingNorthern Star Publications Ltd. publishes three oil and gas industry magazines - “The Roughneck”; “Energy Processing Canada”; “Propane Canada”- as well as the “Canada Gas Plant Directory”, which is available online; volume one of “The Roughneck Joke Book”; and "The Roughneck History Book", which highlights the first 50 years of the magazine, and our take on the history of the Canadian oil and gas industry.

”The Roughneck”, a monthly digest-sized magazine, has been in existence since 1952 and covers the “upstream” sector of the oil and gas industry - exploration, drilling, completions, and production.  The magazine began just five years after Leduc #1 blew in, changing the face of the Canadian oil and gas industry forever. We have been reporting on this fascinating and ever-changing sector ever since. It is an iconic and irreverent little magazine, always telling it like it is, and it is an unabashed promoter of all things oilpatch, and all things Canadian in the oilpatch. Our readers and advertisers cherish it as much as we do.

“Energy Processing Canada” and “Propane Canada” were created in 1968 to serve specific sectors of the downstream oil and gas industry. Both are published bi-monthly. “Energy Processing Canada” covers the industry from the wellhead on down. Whatever happens after product enters the pipeline is our domain. We cover pipelines, processing of natural gas and crude oil, oilsands and heavy oil operations.

Propane Canada is devoted to the Canadian LP Gas industry, from the liquids plant to the burner tip. This multi-billion dollar sector has a single voice in Canada, with our magazine providing that voice.  If you have a propane related product, and want to reach your customers in the lucrative Canadian marketplace, this is the targeted coverage you need.

Northern Star started the "Alberta Gas Plant Directory” in 1992, as a yearly directory of the then 800 gas processing facilities in Canada's premier oil and gas province. This first and only single source of technical and general gas plant information grew over the years to include all gas processing provinces, including British Columbia, Saskatchewan, Ontario, and New Brunswick. These inclusions led us to change our name to the "Canada Gas Plant Directory". We ceased hard copy publication in 2007 after 12 volumes, but the "Canada Gas Plant Directory" lives on through our online version, which is constantly updated as information changes or becomes available.

From the very beginning of "The Roughneck“, there have been jokes in the magazine. Sight gags, parodies, satires, joke ads, and simply the old-fashioned joke, we continue to publish the lighter side of the patch to this day. "The Roughneck Joke Book” highlights some of the best jokes from the first 40 years of “The Roughneck”. Volume II of “The Roughneck Joke Book” is currently in the process of publication.

Calgary-based Northern Star, which employs eight hard working folks, is owned by Scott Jeffrey, who has been in the publishing industry for over 30 years. In earlier days, Mr. Jeffrey worked as a rig hand and gas plant labourer, gaining some first-hand knowledge of the industry as he went to school. As his university time was coming to an end, he got a chance to work as an assistant editor for "Energy Processing Canada" and "Propane Canada", eventually becoming managing editor. When the magazines were offered for sale, Mr. Jeffrey formed Northern Star, and the first magazines under that banner were published in January of 1991. In 1992 Mr. Jeffrey bought "The Roughneck" from friends Delton Campbell and Dave Yager, closing the deal for the 40-year-old publication on his 40th birthday. He also conceived and published "The Alberta Gas Plant Directory" that same year. The next year he published “The Roughneck Joke Book”,  and in 1996 conceived and published “The Roughneck Buy & Sell”.

Also part of the mix, and somewhat complementary as our readers like to fish, is Pawistik Lodge. This fishing destination is in northern Saskatchewan near the Manitoba border and Flin Flon.

Mr. Jeffrey is a member of a number of industry associations, and has been invited to speak at various industry forums in Canada, the United States, and Europe.  He has also appeared on television and radio, speaking on a number of oil & gas related issues.
